Growing Young
Introduction
When the team was assembled to examine young adults in the LCMS and their experiences related to the faith nurturing that they received growing as a part of the many ministries of the LCMS, we began, as any good research team would, by digging into related studies that other organizations had already undertaken. One such study that we examined as a team, was the research published by the Fuller Youth Institute (FYI) in the book Growing Young.
In their research, FYI was building upon their prior research (Sticky Faith) which had sought to understand why some young people remained a part of the ministry of a local congregation while other young people did not. In the Growing Young phase of their research, FYI sought to discover the key characteristics of congregations who were demographically Growing Young rather than growing old. Through their work with churches across denominations, including congregations that are a part of the LCMS, FYI was able to distill their findings into what they termed 6 Core Commitments. These 6 Core Commitments were recognized by FYI as common commitments held by ministries that were Growing Young.
The 7 Practices of Healthy Youth Ministry which was formulated by LCMS Youth Ministry during the process of conducting the 2017 LCMS Young Adult Research correlates to a certain degree with FYI’s Growing Young 6 Core Commitments. The articles in this series will attempt to explore these correlations and how your congregation might learn from both the 7 Practices and 6 Core Commitments how better engage and retain young people in the life of your church, and more importantly disciples in the Body of Christ throughout their adulthood.

Conference
The conference presentation is a great way to introduce the Growing Young concepts to church workers and other leaders as a way to prepare for potential deeper dives through cohort participation or two-day intensive.

Two-Day Intensive
The two-day intensive is great for a church worker conference allowing for a deep dive for workers in preparation for potentially leading a church team through the cohort process.

Regional/District Cohort
A cohort is hosted by a district or circuit and is a great way to encourage churches in a region to Grow Young together.

Church Consultation
A church consultation is an option for congregations who are interested in hosting the training on their own. The church consultation is ideal for those who want to train a larger number of leaders or are unable to partner with other churches in their area to form a cohort.
Cohort Process
Walking together, the Growing Young Cohort Experience gathers groups of congregations together for learning and growth on a collegial and supportive shared journey.
Step 1: Gather your team of 7-10 multi-generational leaders for Cohort Weekend #1. During the weekend, Dr. Rueter will introduce the Growing Young content and work with church teams as they begin to formulate action plans to be implemented back home.
Step 2: Following Cohort Weekend #1, Dr. Rueter will schedule coaching appointments with a point leader for your church to assist in your implementation of the initial phases of your action plan and work through the congregational assessment.
Step 3: Gather again for Cohort Weekend #2 to review and revise your action plan as a team while hearing reports from other cohort teams. This is a great time to learn from one another, make needed adjustments to your plans, and get reinvigorated to continue to implement your action plan.
Step 4: Following Cohort Weekend #2, additional coaching will be provided to point leaders to continue to support your implementation of your revised action plan.
